A Song For a Better World: If I Want To

Updated: Apr 1, 2023

"If I Want To," was originally performed by gospel singer Sandi Patty on her Find It on the Wings album (1994). I have very fond memories as a preteen, about 28 years ago, singing along to this album while my mom drove me and my siblings to school!

Sandi's music was the soundtrack to my faith at that young age, It was through her soothing, beautiful voice that I discovered music was my gateway to God and how I understood His love for me. Through my own struggles in recent years, I have found my way back to her music, as I've reconnected to God's love in a much more profound way.

This song has always resonated with me over the years because it represents my own feelings about how I want to imagine the world. I understand the struggle to keep going with a positive attitude when the world seems to be crumbling around me, but I know I must choose to be the change I wish to see. I want to be a light and a shining example of love and joy, even on days that feel incredibly overwhelming. If we all collectively embrace this mindset, then we not only dream of a better world, but we become a better world.

This song has a lot to say about kindness as well with the powerful lyrics, "Sometimes it takes me all I have to face a world unkind." That has been my own journey of choosing kindness. I try my best to be kind, even when I'm faced with the complete opposite. And I know many of us choose this path as well and it makes a huge impact on our world!

My dream is to continue my joy movement and listen to that "music inside me."

I recognize though it's a dream that includes all of us, and I can't wait to see where this takes us all!

Thank you Sandi Patty for inspiring me for nearly 30 years! I'm so thrilled to share this song with all of you, which brings me back to 11-year old me, singing with Sandi. It's wonderful to sing with her once again!
