As a kid, I loved watching the 1982 Annie movie on repeat, and I would pretend I was Annie constantly, passionately belting out her titular song, "Tomorrow!" Over the past year, I've made my way back to this song and recorded it for the first time. What I have found is that even as an adult, I still sing it with that same fun, childlike passion. I step right into character and embrace Annie's optimism! It has been an incredibly nostalgic and surprisingly therapeutic experience for me to say the least. Connecting back to our childhood and that playful spirit is so important, as it helps bring us back to that pure joy we often disconnect from as an adult.
"Tomorrow" is a hopeful song that encourages us to look at those "gray and lonely" days with a different perspective. We have the choice to lift ourselves up and "grin"and be hopeful for what tomorrow will bring, even if today is not going well. Although I constantly share about shining joy and being positive, I struggle with being optimistic sometimes.
Just as soon as I feel elated about life, I can quickly spiral down to negativity if I'm feeling overwhelmed. To this day, this song is still a beacon for me during those moments, and I can attest that it is an instant mood changer! It still has that healing and positive impact on my soul, as I feel lighter, with more clarity and freedom.
What is your instant mood changer? There's nothing wrong with allowing ourselves to feel all the negative feelings when we are having a bad day or moment, but it feels so much better once we allow the sun back out. I encourage you to find something that can bring you into alignment with your optimistic and joy-filled self, whether it's music, art, affirmations, an exercise routine, or even meditation...whatever works best for you. Then, whenever you experience those stuck days, you are able to more easily switch back to joy when you have that go-to mood changer!
It was so much fun to create this video and express my love of all things Broadway! I hope you enjoy my cover of this song and that it reminds you of your own childhood. Shine on and keep believing that "the sun'll come out tomorrow!"
