#MusicMondays with the Carpenters: Desperado

Updated: Dec 30, 2023

Desperado was written by Don Henley and Glenn Frey of the Eagles in 1973. It became one of their top hits of all time, and even went platinum! Desperado was also the main track and title of their 1973 album, and I learned that their entire album had a country vibe to it. I recently listened to a video of Don Henley singing it on The Howard Stern's show from six years ago and it was very raw, heartfelt, and moving.

I got inspired to cover this song by listening to others cover it. I remember first hearing this song through The Carpenters' own cover, which was incredible! Karen's vocals brought an honest, nurturing, and hopeful quality to the song, encouraging a man to let love in. Karen was actually one of the first few female singers to cover this song and having that female perspective makes me wonder if the context changes. Is this a good friend she is singing to and encouraging, or a good friend she hopes will choose her and love her back?

Singing this song really puts me right into its story, which is very relatable. We all either know someone who is down on their luck in love or we are experiencing it ourselves. My encouragement to those of you who are feeling a bit down is to not lose hope that you'll find your person. As the song says, "It may be raining, but there's a rainbow above you." That's my favorite line because it offers so much hope even in the midst of those feelings of despair and loneliness. Instead of giving up, start believing that things will work out, and start stirring up all those manifestations and desires of your heart. I promise you that you'll see that rainbow.

Hope you enjoy my cover of Desperado, which was inspired by Karen's vocals. I also have a full Carpenters playlist up on YouTube featuring my covers of my favorite Carpenters songs!

Shine on, friends!
