I'm not really a big fan of Valentine's Day, but I'm always going to appreciate a good love song! I've been listening to a lot of Whitney Houston's music lately. She understood what love was, as she sang about it powerfully from the depths of her heavenly soul. I can feel the love bursting through her incredible vocals...she basically takes me to the church of love!
"You Were Loved," from her 1996 film, The Preacher's Wife, has been on repeat for the past week (I kid you not!). The song really resonates with me because it captures what's most important in life when all is said and done: knowing that we've shown love to others and that we were loved.
The chorus of this song, with Whitney's heart-stirring vocals ("loved by someone, touched by someone, held by someone, meant something to someone”), takes me back to all the moments of love in my life. It gets me all choked up because I'm so grateful that I have been shown unconditional love, the greatest gift, and that my soul has been filled with enough love to share with others.
That human, loving connection has lost its way a bit over the past few years, but I'm hopeful it's on it's way back! We have the opportunity to Be Love everyday, and celebrate it everyday, not just on Valentine's Day. That's where my frustration lies: that we build the hype up for this one day and many of us put pressure on ourselves because of it (buying gifts for our significant other, or putting ourselves down because we're single!)
There are no amount of boxes filled with chocolates, teddy bears, flowers, or other Valentine's gifts that can take the place of deep, human connection and love. And that love is what inspires and motivates us to keep going and live our most fulfilled and joyful life.
For my fellow single people out there: Don't let this day get you down (believe me, I know how easy that can be!) Instead, be you, be love, and take the time to remind yourself how loved you are by your friends, family...and fur babies too!
Shine on with love, my friends!
